Bamboo Trade in AfricaTrade in bamboo raw materials and products in East African countries is extremely limited and fluctuates greatly from year to year. UN COMTRADE statistics (that lump bamboo and rattan together) indicate that Kenya exports the greatest value of bamboo and rattan products in East Africa, averaging US-$1,463, 000 for the period 1989 to 2000 inclusive, but that after a peak of over 3 million dollars worth of exports in 1994 the figure has remained relatively steady at about US-$800,000 per annum. Of this approximately US-$100,000 is exported to other East African nations. Tanzania exports an average of US-$81,000 worth of products per year, but this fluctuates widely year-on-year between US-$20,000 and US-$173,000. With the exception of the years 1998 and 1999, when a total of US-$25,000 worth was traded, none is exported to other East African nations. Uganda exports an average of approximately US-$40,000 worth of products per year, with a gradual upward trend since 1989. Exports from Uganda to East African countries peaked in 1989 at US-$6,000. Ethiopia did not export bamboo or rattan products between 1989 – 2000, except for a surprisingly large US-$1.5 million dollars worth in 1998, all of which went to other East African nations.
